Tell us the story of your bookstore’s origin.
We opened in 2019. We started our business as a simple table pop up to spread the LGBTQIA+ agenda and create space for those who wanted to see themselves represented. We moved from NYC and were shocked to see such little queer space and community that existed outside of nightlife. We wanted to create a business where every person regardless of age, gender, religion, race, ability level, and economic status could feel safe, seen, and represented because we did not get the same when we grew up.
What makes your bookstore special?
The Little Gay Shop is the only all-queer bookstore and marketplace in Austin. We started our business in 2019 as a simple table pop up and have expanded since then. Our unapologetically queer mission ensures artists and makers get fair compensation and exposure for their work. We also are a community organizer, curating large-scale markets, events, author talks, pop ups and activations to create intersectional bonds between our community.
