Monkeywrench Books was opened in 2002, the story of its opening is a tale lost to time. A likely explanation is that coming out of the anti-WTO and alter-globalization movements political radicals sought to make inroads where they stood. Having been shown that the convergence model of organizing of that period of radical politics while exciting and at times effective, didn't get the goods that wide eyed rebels desired. So their eyes turned to home and how to intercede in a growing nationalist jingoistic and Islamaphobic tendency brewing in the national consciousness.
